The WRIA 1 Planning Unit Meets. Who Is The Agricultural Water Caucus?
Last night a breath of fresh air blew in Whatcom County.
Between seventy and eighty people gathered for the first meeting of the WRIA 1 (Water
Resources Inventory Area One) Planning Unit since June, 2009. Don’t be fooled. Getting
people to work together is complex, yet the primacy of water is simple.

Lummi Tribe, Hutchings et al Force Water Issues
On August 27th, 2013 John Hutchings, City of Bellingham’s Asst. Public
Works Director, shared Bellingham’s desire to put together a
co-operative agreement to share water withdrawal at the City of
Bellingham’s Middle Fork Diversion with the City of Lynden. Lynden,
Washington, is the hub of agriculture in Whatcom County and needs to be
able to assure the farmers of Lynden that they will have the water
needed to produce their crops and sustain their farms. Whether their
crop is animal or vegetable, they both need a guaranteed right of water
and lots of it.

WRIA 1 Spending Binge On Wildings Science - Planning Unit Oversight Absent
In summation
of this meeting it appears that the Salmon Recovery Funding Board and
the Puget Sound Acquisition and Restoration programs have recommended
and received approval to move forward and spend (over the next two to
three years) approximately $4.177 million dollars. The costs of these
proposed projects breakdown to $3.357 million in Puget Sound Partnership grant funding
(of which there is only $3.134 million available) and $820k in local
matching funds to come from a combination of COB or Whatcom County
(???).

GMA/Hearings Board Pushes Water Allocation Buttons
In a ruling that could have significant impacts on land development in
rural Whatcom County, a state board has ordered county officials to
develop more restrictive regulations to protect water supplies in
streams and under the ground.
